Understanding Value for Money
Value for Money is our signature rating—it answers the question: "Is this card worth its price?" We believe a free card with good rewards is inherently better than an expensive card with the same rewards.
This rating contributes 22.5% to overall score and is what makes our rankings different. Premium cards must significantly outperform free cards to rank well here.
How We Calculate Value for Money
We apply Value for Money multipliers based on annual fee:
- Free cards: 2.5x multiplier (exceptional value)
- Under ₹500: 2.2x multiplier
- ₹500-1,000: 1.8x multiplier
- ₹1,000-2,500: 1.4x multiplier
- ₹2,500-5,000: 1.1x multiplier
- ₹5,000-10,000: 0.9x multiplier
- ₹10,000-25,000: 0.75x multiplier
- Above ₹25,000: 0.6x multiplier (must be exceptional)
Free cards with good features get +0.4 bonus. Expensive cards that don't rank well get -0.3 penalty.

Will you use benefitsWhat Makes Good Value
- Free cards with strong rewards: Amazon Pay ICICI, Flipkart Axis—great value at zero cost
- Fee waiver achievability: Cards where you'll naturally hit waiver thresholds
- Benefit utilization: Premium cards only deliver value if you use their perks
- Net value calculation: (Rewards + Benefits Value) - Annual Fee = True Value
Who Benefits from Value Focus
Everyone should consider value, but especially:
- Average spenders who can't justify premium card fees
- Value maximizers who want every rupee to count
- Anyone comparing free vs paid cards and wondering if fees are worth it
Maximizing Value
- Calculate your breakeven: How much must you spend/use to justify the annual fee?
- Don't pay for unused perks: Lounge access is worthless if you never fly
- Consider opportunity cost: Could a free card with reinvested "fee savings" beat a premium card?
- Track actual usage: Many overestimate how much they'll use premium benefits
Value for Money FAQ
Why do free cards often outrank premium cards here?
Because value is relative to cost. A free card offering 5% cashback delivers infinite ROI. A ₹10,000 card must deliver ₹10,000+ in quantifiable value just to break even, then significantly more to beat the free option.
When are premium cards actually worth it?
When you'll fully utilize their benefits. Frequent international travelers using Priority Pass, golf enthusiasts using complimentary rounds, and high spenders earning uncapped rewards can extract value exceeding even ₹50,000 annual fees.
Bottom Line
Value for Money is perhaps the most important factor for most users. Don't be seduced by premium features you won't use. The best card is one where your actual value extracted significantly exceeds your actual cost paid.
