How many credit cards is too many?

by rewardhunter 2d ago 832 views 10 replies

Genuine question - I currently have 9 credit cards. Wife thinks I have a problem. Do I?

My Current Cards

  • HDFC Infinia (primary travel)
  • HDFC Diners Black (SmartBuy)
  • HDFC Millennia (fuel/misc)
  • Amazon Pay ICICI (Amazon)
  • Flipkart Axis (Flipkart)
  • Amex Gold (dining/Taj)
  • SBI SimplySave (backup)
  • OneCard (5% categories)
  • Axis Magnus (newest addition)
  • My Argument

  • Each serves a purpose
  • Combined limit = 30L (emergency fund)
  • Rewards across different categories
  • No annual fees lost (all waived or LTF)
  • Wife's Argument

  • "You spend hours researching cards"
  • "The rewards apps take up phone storage"
  • "You get anxious about meeting spends"
  • Who's right? Is 9 too many?

If all fees are waived and you're not stressed, you're fine! I have 11.

The wife is right about the anxiety part. That's when it becomes unhealthy.

I consolidated to 4 cards last year. Much more peaceful life now.

Track your actual savings from having 9 vs hypothetical 4. Data might surprise you.

9 is manageable. 15+ is where it gets crazy (yes, I've seen people with 20+).

If you're spending hours researching, maybe it's become a hobby? Nothing wrong with that!

The 'emergency fund' credit limit argument is dangerous. That's debt, not fund!
